Q: Take Anything! Just Not My Boobs!

Dear Tony,

Will I lose my boobs if I start working out really hard and dieting at the same time? I?ve noticed that most of the fitness girls are either real flat or have implants. What?s the deal?

Well-Endowed (and wanting to stay that way), El Paso

A: Dear Endowed:

I know of one crazy contest promoter who tells women not to train their chest or they?ll lose their breasts. Operative word here: crazy. Weight training does not cause breasts to diminish.

Breasts are mostly fat and if an individual trains hard and restricts calories to lower their body fat under 10 percent, there will be a loss of breast size. There could also be a drop in hormone levels?estrogen is fat dependent?which could cause amenorrhea and loss of breast size. If a woman uses anabolic steroids there is almost always diminished breast size, along with a huskier voice and facial hair. However, weight training does not in and of itself decrease breast size. With today?s more reasonable judging standards, you should not feel compelled to lower your body fat below a healthy level. For women, depending on their natural build, 12-18 percent body fat can be quite lean?and healthy?if you?ve done your homework in the gym.
