Declare the War on Pizza!
Dear Tony,
I have been attending college for the past four years and the most significant thing I have learned is that pizza and beer lead to weight gain. The problem is I can’t stand the temptation. Every night I say to myself, “I will have a salad for dinner,” but then my roommate, the boys across the way and the girls down the hall all get pizzas delivered and the sights and smells overwhelm me. I cave every time and have gained a dress size every semester. When will this madness end?

Dear No Mo:
At the rate you’re going, it won’t end at graduation! You’re setting yourself up for a lifelong battle with your weight. Your “can’t fight ‘em, so join ‘em” attitude is the problem. You’ve got to get your mojo back!
If the situation is to blame, then change it! Go to the gym after classes and grab a salad afterwards. You might even try those low-fat Subway sandwiches. Stock your room with some healthy snacks and bars. Try to avoid “pizza time” completely, and when you can’t, be sure you’re not hungry and you have a low-calorie snack (make sure it’s something you like) to squelch the temptation.
Better yet, recruit some fat-fighting support. I’m sure you’re not the only one going up in clothes sizes. Build yourself a team and declare war on the pizza-and-beer regime. Go to the health club together. Meet for healthy lunches and dinners. Take up power walking or jogging. There is power in numbers, so if you like to be a team player, find or build yourself a healthier team.
