Q: Can't Those Calves Turn into Cows?

I’ve been working out for about five years now and competing the last two. My diet is solid, my training on target and I stay looking great in and out of season. The only fault I have is small calves. They’re defined, but high and small.

I do calf raises a lot and even bought a pair of these spring-loaded shoes so that I’d sort of "bounce" around the house every where I went. After a couple weeks, that got real old. Do you have any sane advice?

Ellen M., Chicago, IL

A: Dear Ellen:

When it comes to calves they are often born, not built. A high calf is just that, a high calf. You can continue to work it with calf raises to obtain a bit more size and definition. You might even try doing your squats and lunges while standing on your toes the entire time--it’s a killer on your calves!

Today’s judges understand that weight training can’t change certain genetics. Most judges will overlook high calf development when the rest of the package and routine works. Let your strengths draw all the attention away from your weaknesses. It’s a philosophy that successful people in every walk of life have followed for centuries.
