Q: Divorce Depression

Dear Tony,

My divorce is finally final. I was married just three years, but that was plenty of time to have a child and go from a size 4 to a size 16. My friends know how depressed I have been with my weight gain and divorce so they’ve invited me along on a singles cruise in six months. Can you give me some pointers to get shipshape, fast?

A: Dear F&D:

Begin with exercise—it is a proven remedy for depression and weight gain! Sign up with a health club immediately and enlist the help of a personal trainer. A trainer will help motivate you, fast. With just six months’ lead-time, you don’t have time to waste with mediocre workouts. You need to really push your body to get dramatic results! Pick up some of my training tapes for those days you can’t make it to the gym. And try to work out five or six times a day.

Exercise is most effective with a change in eating habits. The best way to change your habits is to empty all your kitchen cabinets and the refrigerator—everything! Then make a simple shopping list, just like the food pyramid. That means lots of fresh fruits, vegetables, grains, nuts, reduced-fat dairy, and lean meat protein. Remember, candy bars and colas are not food groups! Once you have only healthy foods to eat, it’s easy to eat healthy (reserve a special cabinet/space for your child’s favorite foods—macaroni and Spaghettios are fine for kids but not for adults who want to lose weight).
